Today, the highest frequencies of this line are present in Belgium, where it makes up 6 percent of maternal lineages; in the Netherlands, it makes up approximately 3 percent of maternal lineages.

Haplogroup HV derives from the haplogroup R0 which in turn derives from haplogroup R is a descendant of macro-haplogroup N like its sibling M, is a descendant of haplogroup L3.
Haplogroup H has also been found among Iberomaurusian specimens dating from the Epipaleolithic at the Taforalt and Afalou prehistoric sites.
Additionally, haplogroup H has been found among specimens at the mainland cemetery in KulubnartiSudanwhich date from the Early Christian period AD — Among all these clades, the subhaplogroups H1 and H3 have been subject to a more detailed study and would be associated to the Magdalenian expansion from SW Europe c.
H1 encompasses an important fraction of Western European mtDNA lineages, reaching its local peak among contemporary Basques The clade also occurs at high frequencies elsewhere in the Iberian Peninsulaas well as in the Maghreb Tamazgha.
The rare H1cb subclade is concentrated among Fulani groups inhabiting the Sahel. These locally born individuals were dated to the 10th century and carried the H haplotype, which is exclusive to the Canary Islands and Algeria. H3 represents the second largest fraction of the H genome after H1 and has a somewhat similar distribution, with peaks in Portugal, Spain, Scandinavia and Finland. Example of H3 sub-groups are: .
H5 may have evolved in West Asia, where it is most frequent and diverse in the Western Caucasus. However, its H5a subclade has a stronger representation in Europe, though at low levels. Haplogroup H10 is subclade which came into existence between 6, and 10, years ago.
Haplogroup H10e has been found at a neolithic site, namely the Bom Santo cave near Lisbon. H11 is commonly found in Central Europe. H18 occurs on the Arabian Peninsula. These haplogroups are both found in the Caucasus region.

Another piece of history that shows that haplogroups H1 and H3 may have come from the Neolithic farmers from the Near East. This is from a year old site of Treilles in France. About 17 mitochondrial DNA sequences that were retrieved from this site included three that belonged to haplogroup H1 and three to haplogroup H3. Though the amount of data available is meagre, the minor subclades of Haplogroup H like H4, H10, H17 and H45 seem to have some kind of an exclusivity in Europe.
For example the haplogroup H4, that is found among present day Basque and Sardinian populations was found in Neolithic Spain.

Moreover the Basque and Sardinian populations are also known for high percentage of mixed Mesolithic and Neolithic European ancestry. Haplogroup H was found to be associated with higher maximum oxygen uptake VO2 max Martinez-Redondo et al, This means that individuals with haplogroup H have greater physical endurance and are more likely to benefit from protracted exercise hours.
According to a study on Polish athletes, the haplogroup H was shown to have the maximum frequency among endurance athletes preparing for elite tournaments like the Olympics Marsuzak et al, Get your Origin 2. The two polymorphisms that were found to be associated with elite endurance performance were G that defines haplogroup H12b and C that defines haplogroup H1B1.

Although there has been considerable recent progress in studying mitochondrial genome variation in Europe at the complete sequence resolution, little data of comparable resolution is so far available for regions like the Caucasus and the Near and Middle East—areas where most of European genetic lineages, including hg H, have likely emerged.
This gap in our knowledge causes a serious hindrance for progress in understanding the demographic prehistory of Europe and western Eurasia in general.
Here we describe the phylogeography of hg H in the populations of the Near East and the Caucasus. We have analyzed samples of hg H at high resolution, including 15 novel complete mtDNA sequences. As in Europe, most of the present-day Near Eastern—Caucasus area variants of hg H started to expand after the last glacial maximum LGM and presumably before the Holocene.
Furthermore, irrespective of their common origin, significant differences between the distribution of hg H sub-hgs in Europe and in the Near East and South Caucasus imply limited post-LGM maternal gene flow between these regions.
The Levantine part of the Near East was the area that was colonized foremost, though likely only episodically, aboutyears before present YBP Shea Based on genetic data, it has been suggested that the earliest phase of the long-lasting settlement of Eurasia by anatomically modern humans AMH started 60,—70, YBP and proceeded alongside the southern coast of the supercontinent, probably crossing first the Red Sea around Bab-el-Mandeb, continuing to India and further East Cavalli-Sforza et al.

An absolute majority of the western Eurasian mitochondrial DNA mtDNA pool consists of a small number of phylogenetically well-characterized branches of haplogroup hg R. It has been accepted for some time now that most of the mtDNA hgs presently found in Europe, including hg H Torroni et al. A number of hg H subclades show characteristic regional distribution. Irrespective of their likely ancestral status relative to Europeans, the West Asian and the Caucasus populations have been profoundly underrepresented in the published mtDNA data sets.
Here we analyze spatial and temporal spread of hg H in the Near East and the Caucasus and interpret the obtained results in a comprehensive West Eurasian context of this major maternal lineage, informative in terms of ancient human migrations between West Asia, the Caucasus, and Europe. A total of 6, samples were screened for the absence of Alu I restriction site induced by a T to C transition at npindicative of hg H.
Of these, 1, fell to hg H and samples were involved to detailed clustering. All confirmed hg H mtDNAs were subsequently screened for a series of single nucleotide polymorphisms that define different subbranches of this mtDNA lineage. Twenty-four polymorphisms throughout the mitochondrial genome were analyzed in all samples. Transitions at nps,,,and TA transversion were detected by RFLP analysis fig. Almost a thousand years later an H10e find was associated with a Corded Ware Culture burial in Eulau. The site Eulau, Burgenlandkreis, is located in the valley of the Saale river in Germany.
What is interesting to note in this context, is that H10e was first found at the Bom Santo cave which is located near the epicenter of the birth of the Bell Beaker culture. Then the find at Eulau was geographically located at the boundary between the Bell Beaker area of influence and the Corded Ware Culture area of influence. Therefore we may see evidence that some women of Bell Beaker ethnic origin became part of the Corded Ware Culture.
Haplogroup H10e has currently three descendent branches, namely H10e1, H10e2 and H10e3. Out of 14 individuals analyzed there was only a single sample belonging to haplogroup H, namely a migrant male belonging to haplogroup H10e. Haplogroup H10e was found in one individual out of nine tested.
Furthermore, H10e has been found in a 10th century sample from a male individual buried at the Zvonimirovo cemetery site in Croatia. There is also a strong Viking component with this haplogroup. The following samples from Scandianavia of the Viking age have all been associated with H10e: .
H10e has been found twice at the medieval Tuukkala archeological site in Finland. Pierre Terrail — 30 Aprilseigneur de Bayard, the legendary medieval French knight "without fear and beyond reproach", is thought to have carried mtDNA haplogroup H10e. This has been determined by DNA-testing both his exhumed remains and DNA-matching with living relatives on the maternal line.
