Just like many other companies in the late s, Fender decided to start manufacturing products in Korea. As with any new product line, Fender came up with a new numbering system for these guitars. You would think after nearly 40 years of producing guitars, Fender would have a standardized serial number system down by now, right? Fender admits that there is little to no information about the serial numbers from What we do know about the early Korean days was that there were three different plants: the Samick pant, the Young Chang plant, and the Sung-Eum plant.

Usually the first digit represented the year of production. It does stand for the year of production in a way. The s numbers were written in black. They just had six, seven, or eight digits with the first number representing the year. Some of these no prefix serial numbers have been found on guitars produced all the way through Fender did some crazy stuff back then. Watch out for these! AfterFender really cleaned up their serial number process.

Since Fender was using new plants to build their guitars, they decided the change the numbering system again, but this time they changed it to something more like the American guitars. Both the Cort and Sungham plants used unique numbers. So a guitar produced by Cort in would have a serial number of CN2 followed by five digits.

These serial numbers were used until when Fender stopped producing guitars at the Sungham factory. Since all guitar production was moved to the Cort factory, Fender decided to change its numbering system again. The serial numbers were a little messed up. As you can see, the Korean made Fender Squier serial numbers are no less confusing than any of the other guitars. In some ways, it helps to know the story behind the numbers to understand their meaning. I hope this article helped you figure out how old your Korean Fender guitar is.

He's talking crap. Korean basses are all over the map quality-wise, from the best to the worst, so there's no sense in the statement "Korean stuff is top quality".

There are some older Squiers that are supposed to be great, but the rest of his chatter makes me not want to believe that his is one of the particularly good ones. Jun 3, 3. In this original s ad for the new Korean Strat it can be seen that only four colour finishes are available. It's pretty clear from the ad that Fender is proud of the new retail price.

When the new Korean Squiers hit the shops, it was a difficult situation for the retailers. Perceptions towards Korean manufacture were still very poor at that time, and dealers didn't want customers to be put off the guitars before they'd even tried them. The reality was that the features were nearly the same and neither model was an accurate reissue. The real difference was of course the quality. Clever approach though - this was one of the best methods I saw of dealing with the awkward situation.

Oh, and by the way, even with their much higher prices, the Japanese Squiers still sold out fairly quickly. Email This BlogThis! Labels:FenderguitarsKoreaSquierStratocaster. Newer Post Older Post Home. This is a Korean version of that era and it is a gem.
