Was the information on this page helpful?Twenty years ago if you wanted to mount a noise-moderating suppressor on your hunting rifle, it meant a trip to a machine shop and a long explanation.

In the s silencers, and any other device meant to muffle the sound of a firearm were lumped in under the National Firearms Act NFA as Title II weapons, along with short-barreled rifles and shotguns, machine guns, and other devices. While it was not mentioned in the testimony in front of Congress at the time why these instruments were deemed to be in need of special regulation, the fact is they did not escape the increased regulation and today have to be transferred after a lengthy process through a Class III dealer.

According to the American Suppressor Association and the National Shooting Sports Foundationthese devices offer recoil and muzzle flash reduction, increased accuracy, and, of course, a solution to hearing loss associated with firearms use. This made the devices exotic and led to their use almost only by Hollywood. With such a limited market for these guns, rifle makers rarely threaded their barrel muzzles from the factory, leaving such a procedure to the realm of aftermarket gunsmiths and custom companies to perform should a hunter so desire.

In just the past four years, suppressor ownership across the country has doubled fromregistered cans in to more thantoday. No less than 39 states allow ownership of NFA-registered suppressors, and most of these further allow their use in hunting, with this club increasing every year. In alone, Georgia, Louisiana, and Alabama all expanded this right to their sportsmen, while Florida is considering doing the same.

This dramatic increase in numbers has led rifle makers to make sure that this growing demographic has something that comes direct from the factory that will accept a screw-on suppressor. As a bonus, a threaded muzzle allows a rifle to accept not only sound suppressors but also aftermarket compensators, brakes, and flash suppressors.

Until recently, there was not a large enough market for manufacturers to justify the development of suppressor ready guns.

However, Williams contends the explosion in the number of suppressors owned nationwide has sparked a trend in the firearms industry to give the people what they want. To this, Big Green adds a variant of their Model When you consider that these include calibers as diverse as BLK. When you include their existing Scout series rifles and American Rimfire guns, Ruger has more than 20 rifles in their lineup that are suppressor-ready. Even grand old manufacturers like Browning have jumped on the suppressor-ready rifle market with guns like their X-Bolt Hog Stalkera.

In short, with some 32 states now that allow hunting with suppressed firearms, this trend is likely to continue. Read More. Older Posts.Despite its lower price point the AB3 is designed to be a contender for accuracy, features, style, and comfort.

The AB3 barrel is designed with the same methods as the more famous Browning rifles. Affordability is the result of innovative new technologies that simplify production without sacrificing the top performance expected of Browning. Using precision button-rifling that is triple checked for finish, straightness and uniformity, the chamber is hand-reamed.

The AB3 trigger is pre-set at the factory to break between 3. The model on the Show floor was definitely closer to the lower end. The trigger had no creep at all, was very smooth, and had a crisp break.

Trigger control is a primary downfall of many shooters, but the Browning AB3 trigger does a good job in providing the best possibility for success.

The AB3 bolt is oversized to provide additional rigidity, but is machined inside and out to keep the weight low. Designed with three locking lugs for extra strength, the bolt is covered in a chrome coating providing a very smooth and quiet action. The bolt release is an easily manipulated lever on the left side of the receiver where the receiver and barrel meet.

The enlarged AB3 bolt is chrome coated for protection and smooth operation. A close-up of the AB3 enlarged bolt designed for rigidity. The chrome coating should provide long term protection as well. Browning uses an Inflex Technology recoil pad to soften recoil, particularly for the larger calibers, and allow the shooter to regain their sight picture more quickly for follow-up shots.

The Inflex recoil pad is designed to redirect recoil to assist with accuracy and follow-up shots. The AB3 uses a tang safety lever, which blocks the trigger when engaged. There is a firing pin safety for added security, and a unique bolt lock override button to the right and behind the bolt lever.

Browning A-Bolt & A-Bolt II

When the override button is depressed it allows the shooter to safely open the bolt for inspection or unloading, while the tang safety is still engaged. The AB3 tang safety is easily manipulated, and observed for firing status. Another great feature of the Browning AB3 is the detachable magazine.

In my opinion detachable magazine rifles are by far the easier rifles to load and shoot, and safer when trouble-shooting problems. Ammunition can be stored easily and safely, but still be readily available. The detachable magazine inserts with a tactile and audible click, and the release lever is located in front of the magazine. A composite stock assists with cost reduction, however, instead of a simple composite design the AB3 has gone a step further by adding a tight grip with a slightly sharper palm angle and enhanced texture.

The grip is designed to optimize trigger reach, making the critical trigger pull much easier to accomplish in the proper squeeze method. The texture of the grip is not aggressive, but still assists the hand in grasping the rifle securely. The fore-end tapers down in sleek lines, and incorporates the same texture as the grip to provide additional control from the support hand.

The classic Browning A-Bolt often referred to as the A-Bolt II delivers dependable, pinpoint accuracy that exceeds the stringent standards of the modern rifleman.

A very sophisticated bolt action. When unlocked, three guide ribs on the bolt sleeve align with the three locking lugs to allow the bolt to slide smoothly. When locked, these three lugs provide massive bolt strength. The A-Bolt II feeds very smoothly because of its unique, patented cartridge depressor that stays in position, independent of the bolt rotation, as the bolt slides gently over the cartridges in the magazine.

The bolt face is recessed, completely surrounding the cartridge base. A cocking indicator located at the rear of the bolt offers visual and tactile firing pin status. Today's A-Bolt II rifles are in limited production and are often far more specialized than in the past. Be aware that they are available only in limited distribution at a limited number of dealers, in special models only. But the features that made it famous for decades are still there.

Have a look at A-Bolt II rifles and see for yourself why, in the history of Browning, the A-Bolt II is considered one of the best Browning bolt actions ever made, excelling in versatility, accuracy and performance. The barrel is free floating and glass bedded at the recoil lug and front of receiver to maintain the proper spacing around the barrel for consistent accuracy. The recessed muzzle crown helps protect the rifling.

Barrels are triple checked for interior finish, straightness and air-gauged for uniformity. A chrome-plated trigger sear provides cleaner, crisper trigger pull.

Screw adjustable and pre-set at approximately 4 lbs. Hinged floorplate with detachable box magazine makes it simple and fast to load a spare magazine.
